FALLING GIRL REVIEW
Falling Girl is a unique and interesting installation art for me because of the narrative nature. Viewers and participaters can create their own narration or interpretation based on their own perception and understanding of the artwork.
As for me, my thoughts regarding the installation is rather similiar to what the artist intended it to be.
Falling girl and the passing of time
This two elements seem linear at first but upon deeper observation I realized that they have a significant change throughout the movie. I take them as time’s perspective towards the world. Time flows only in one direction and each moment is merely a glimpse as what the falling girl experienced when she see all the silhouettes during her fall.
Viewer’s and actors’ silhouettes
For most, this might be the main focus of the artwork. Recorded movements from numerous viewers give the illusion of variety in actions and activities when in truth it is all a playback in a loop. The placement of the silhouettes inside the building give the sense of containment and helplessness. While we can only watch as the girl keep on falling, we are stuck doing the same routines. This signifies the reality of life, the daily cycles we feel like a progression forward but still can’t keep up with the time passing by and while we do have the realization just like the silhouettes does with the falling girl, we can’t stop and reverse time just as the silhouettes can’t save the girl from continue falling.
